The Chinese-Spanish co-production animation project "Dragonkeeper" (tentative translation) was announced. It is co-directed by Salvador Simó, the director of last year's acclaimed animation "Buñuel's Labyrinth of the Turtles", and Jian-Ping Li (transliteration, not sure if it is the one from Beijing Film Academy). The voice actors include Bill Nye ("Love Actually" and "Shaun of the Dead"), Bill Bailey ("Blake's Books" and "Hot Blood"), and Naomi Yang ("Sway").
The story is adapted from the fantasy novel of the same name by Australian writer Carole Wilkinson. It tells the story of a slave girl Ping who raises dragons in the emperor's castle and dreams of freedom. On a destined day, a dragon escapes from the castle, forcing Ping to embark on a mission: to send the last dragon egg to the ocean to save the dragon race from extinction. During this journey, she unlocks her special abilities and finds that she is the last real "dragon keeper" in existence. Naomi Yang voices Ping, Bailey voices Wang Chao (transliteration), and Nye voices Danzi.
The film is produced by Dragoia Media, Movistar+, Atresmedia Cine, and China Film Animation. It will be the largest Sino-Spanish co-production to date. Sergio Pablos (Despicable Me) is responsible for the early visual design. The film is now in production and is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2021.
