Chang’an City is an ancient and majestic city that has stood strong for hundreds of years. However, the Zhuque Gate, which is the major gateway to Chang’an, bears a sword mark that a drunken young man engraved with a long sword. The sword mark is a poem that reads, “I want to go up to the sky and embrace the bright moon.” This poem caused a sensation throughout the entire city of Chang’an. When Sheriff Di Renjie wanted to arrest the young man for damaging the city, the talented empress refused to allow it. The empress even commanded to preserve the sword mark, full of meaning, on the Suzaku Gate. Within a few days, the young man named Li Bai, also known as the “Sword Immortal,” who could reach Chang’an with just one sword and one man, had spread throughout Chang’an.

Li Bai was once a young and carefree man. He refused an invitation from the empress to become an official in the court and instead, set out to explore the world and test his sword skills. When he saw the mighty Yellow River for the first time, his sword intent surged and flowed into the sea, never to return. Despite having no authority, secret magic techniques, or demon bloodline, Li Bai relied on his skills and his sword to become the foremost among the powerful men in the empire. He was a veritable genius, and every time he defeated an opponent, he would compose a poem in their honor. These poems and the names of the swords he used became famous throughout the land. Some people even sought to be defeated by him, just to obtain one of his poems, which left others in awe.

Li Bai, a renowned Sword Immortal from Chang’an, arrived at Yunzhong Desert, the place where he was born under a mirage in the clouds. He had honed his sword skills to the highest level and was ready to face any challenge. However, he was shocked to find that the prosperous city he remembered from his childhood was no longer there. While exploring the ruins, he came across a princess whom traffickers had enslaved. She told him that the empire’s cavalry had invaded the Yunzhong Desert, destroying everything in their path. A sea of yellow sand buried the once-thriving city. Li Bai wanted to rescue the princess, but she chose to end her own life from the humiliation she had faced.

The sight of blood stirred Li Bai, a chivalrous warrior. He took up his sword and entered Chang’an a second time. He went straight to the empress and questioned her about her plan to conquer the Yunzhong Desert. Overnight, the situation in Chang’an changed and the Daming Palace fell to the Sword Immortal’s blade. For the first time in history, an ordinary person caused a stir in Chang’an City, which had never experienced external conquest.

No one knows what happened in the end. Li Bai managed to escape Chang’an City unscathed. Historians did not record the conversation Li Bai had with the empress because it was considered taboo.

Only Li Bai himself knew that had wounded his pride and he was at the peak of his strength. From then on, he began to wander and seek new meaning in his lonely journey. Besides his sword, Li Bai always had wine as his constant companion.

On an ordinary day in Chang’an City, travelers from the desert land looked up at the sword marks on the Suzaku Gate, while the Wuling teenagers were in commotion due to the beautiful music of the piano in Changle Square. The ginkgo tree in the temple was still lush and Di Renjie’s spies hid in the darkness, nervously watching the handsome man in white accompanied by wine and sword. It was the swordsman, Li Bai, entering Chang’an for the third time.

Everyone had thought that the Sword Immortal was in ruins, but in the government office, Di Renjie looked at the report on Li Bai’s whereabouts and showed an elusive sneer. He asked his spy, “Yuanfang, what do you think?” However, before the spy could answer, Di Renjie said to himself, “When he takes off the sheath again, it will be even more earth-shattering. This guy is too proud and too lonely.” And several years later, what Di Renjie said would come true.

Now, the question remains, how will Chang’an City be shaken this time? “The sword of the river comes from the sky!”
